Mildred Bernice Rich, 95, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Jefferson City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born November 4, 1914, in Jefferson City, a daughter of the late George and Nannie (Thomas) Schmidt. She was a 1933 graduate of Jefferson City High School, and went on to attend Jefferson City Junior College. On October 15, 1939, Bernice was united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, to Paul C. Rich, who preceded her in death on January 7, 1993. Bernice worked as a Clerk Typist in the Appeals Section, for the State of Missouri at Employment Security for 28 years. Prior to that, she worked in accounting for the Missouri Department of Corrections for 20 years, and also worked as Switchboard Operator for Southwestern Bell. During World War II, Bernice worked for Paden's Photo Shop, where she did photo re-touching and tinting. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, where she was a pianist for Sunday school. She was also a dual-member of the Order of the Eastern Star Victoria Chapter #14, and the Jefferson Chapter #496, where she was a pianist and accompanist. Bernice loved music, reading and gardening, but most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter: Paulette Meyer (husband Vernon) of Jefferson City; three grandchildren: Jeff Schwartz (wife Chrissy) of Boonville; Julie Watson (husband John) of Jefferson City; Jonathan Schwartz (wife Amy) of Jefferson City; three step-grandchildren: Clara Merrill (husband Bob) of Warsaw; Teresa Friedlander of Sedalia; Ada Buckley of Sedalia; and eight great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sisters: Elsie Moeller, Marguerite Sanders; one brother: Earl Schmidt; and one great-granddaughter: Shelby Boone Schwartz. Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, with Dr. Doyle E. Sager officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
