Mr. John E. Ellsworth, age 74 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the Capital Region Medical Center. John was born June 15, 1935, in Novinger, Mo., the son of Ezra L. and Edna M. Baker Ellsworth. He was married on August 24, 1972, in Miami, Oklahoma to Velma J. Polacek who survives at the home. A resident of the central Missouri area since 1974, John graduated from Novinger High School, Novinger, Mo. Later, he received a B.S. from Columbia College and a M.A. from Lincoln University. He studied for a PhD from Iowa State University. John taught at Lincoln University and Iowa State University where he also conducted research. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict where he received a bronze star. John owned a restaurant and he was employed with the Missouri Dept. of Corrections as a case worker, function unit manager and assistant superintendent I until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, he was employed in maintenance with Taylor Realty and as a driver with First Student, where he was awarded the driver of the year. John was a member of First Assembly of God Church; a past member and past president of the Cole County R-5 Board of Education in Eugene; a Sunday school teacher and choir leader at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church; a member of the board of directors of the House of Claire; and he attended the Western Hills Assembly of God Church. He was a volunteer counselor with prison inmates and had a nursing home ministry. Other survivors include: five sons, Kevin J. Ellsworth and his wife Tina of Columbia, Mo., John "Jay" Ellsworth and his wife Jennifer of Eugene, Mo., Joe E. Ellsworth and Sarah Atkins of Holts Summit, Mo., Stanley J. Ellsworth and his wife Denise of Green Castle, Mo., and Daniel Ellsworth and his wife Diane of Green Castle, Mo.; three daughters, Lillian J. Kinard and her husband Jerry of Jefferson City, Mo., Martha Dyer and her husband Albert of Green Castle, Mo., and Judy McQuoid of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister, Susan Rhoads and her husband Jerry of Memphis, Tennessee; 20 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ezra Ellsworth Jr. and William "Bill" Ellsworth; and one sister, Lucille Ellsworth. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the First Assembly of God Church with the Reverend Lowell Perkins officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Summit Memorial Gardens, Holts Summit, Mo. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the First Assembly of God Church or the Goldschmidt Cancer Center at Capital Region Medical Center.
