Pastor Gary W. Baker, age 70 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, December 25, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Center. Gary was born August 24, 1940, in Linn, Mo., the son of Charley F. and Ida Mae Phillips Baker. He was married on November 23, 1961, in Edwardsville, Ill., to Joan P. Ellsworth. Gary graduated from Linn High School, Linn, Mo., and St. Louis Christian College, Florissant, Mo. He received his Masters in Divinity from Lincoln Christian Seminary, Lincoln, Ill. He served as Senior Minister with the Sailor Springs Christian Church, Sailor Springs, Ill., prior to becoming the Senior Minister with Capital City Christian Church in Jefferson City in 1966. He faithfully served Capital City Christian Church for 40 years prior to his retirement in 2006. During his 40 years at Capital City Christian Church, Gary wanted the church to meet the needs of our community. He was instrumental in starting many forms of outreach, including Capital City Christian Church Child Care, and the Journey to Bethlehem. After retirement, Gary also served as interim minister for the Eugene Christian Church and the New Bloomfield Christian Church. He was a member of Capital City Christian Church; past chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of St. Louis Christian College; past chairman and member of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Christian Convention; and a member of the Missouri Operation for Vigorous Evangelism. Gary was founder of Christian Prison Ministry for the State of Missouri. He loved his family, especially playing croquet and fishing with his grandsons. Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, Joan Baker; one daughter, Jill Findley and her husband Eric of Jefferson City, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Tyler Findley and Levi Findley. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Scott Baker on February 3, 2003. Visitation will be at the Capital City Christian Church from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2010. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the Capital City Christian Church. Interment will be at the Oklahoma Church of Christ Cemetery near Linn, Mo. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Capital City Christian Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
