Gladys Opal Gerritsen, 89, of Chamois, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, in Springfield. She was born July 25, 1920, in Winfield, Kansas, a daughter of William and Bertha Kingsbury Bright.
In 1942, Gladys was united in marriage to Joseph Benning, who preceded her in death in 1963. On May 18, 1968, Gladys was united in marriage in Chamois to John Gerritsen, who survives at their home. Gladys worked for the United States Postal Service for over 40 years, retiring as the Postmistress in Chamois. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison, where she served as church organist, member of numerous church committees and member of the weekly quilting group. Gladys also was an Election Judge in Osage County for many years. Gladys was always full of energy and loved being active. She was an avid bowler for many years, and enjoyed gardening, working with flowers, sewing, quilting and making crafts. Every year Gladys had a booth at Chamois Day to showcase her crafts. Other survivors include one daughter: Linda Benning of Houston, Texas; one brother: Floyd Swafford of Perry, Kansas; and two nieces: Sheila Isern and Beverly Golder. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today at the Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home, Chamois, and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. David Means officiating. Interment will follow in the Assumption Church Cemetery.
