Mary Jane Mitchell, 80, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010, at her home.
She was born February 28, 1930, in New Bloomfield, a daughter of John Wesley and Mary Ella (Jefferson) Childs. She attended the Hawkins school in New Bloomfield, and was a 1946 graduate of Lincoln Laboratory School at Lincoln University. She was married in May 1952, to Elmer Mitchell. He preceded her in death. Mary Jane worked for the Missouri Department of Revenue from 1967 to 1973, K-Mart from 1973 to 1976, and the Missouri Department of Agriculture from 1976, until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in New Bloomfield and was a volunteer at St. Mary's Health Center. She is survived by one brother, Donald Childs and wife Jewelene of Fulton; three sisters: Florence Vaughan and husband Wesley, Lois Whitler and Carol Carthron all of Jefferson City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children: Norma Tatum in 2004, David Childs in 2000, Gerald Mitchell in 2004, and Randy Mitchell in 1991. Friends will be received from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, Jefferson City. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Arnold G. Parks officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church.
