Walter Henry Schaefer, 84, of Taos, passed away Monday, January 14, 2019 at his residence. He was born June 25, 1934, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Joseph Bernard and Joanna Anna "Jennie" (Toebben) Schaefer. He was united in marriage on April 14, 1956, at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martins to Ruth Jane Benne, who survives at the home. In earlier years, Walter worked for Tweedie Shoe Factory and spent most of his career at the Missouri Department of Corrections as a correction officer. He also farmed most of his life. Walter was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; Taos Knights of Columbus; Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus St. Jude Assembly; Host Lions Club of Jefferson City; and the Eagles Club. He loved to stay busy outside doing work in his garden, woodworking and cutting wood. He really enjoyed antiques and going to auctions. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth Schaefer, Taos; three children, Michael (Connie) Schaefer, Wardsville; Joyce Wilson, Taos; Jane (Terry) Patten, Taos; seven grandchildren, Julie Wilson, Christine Wilson, Derek Wilson, Brad (Julie) Schaefer, Joseph Schaefer, Jessica Patten, Lauren (Keith) Buechter; six great-grandchildren, Madison Backes, Chance Hardin, Elizabeth Jackson, Porter Schaefer, Gavin Buechter, Henry Buechter; one brother, Norbert (Janet) Schaefer, Osage City; and two brothers-in-law, Oscar Branson, Linn, and Harry Otto, Westphalia. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Louis Schaefer; a grandson, Thomas Dean Schaefer; two sisters, Mary Catherine Otto and Joan Branson; an infant brother, Herbert V. Schaefer; and a step-sister, Dorothy Richter. Visitation will be 4:30-7 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with a prayer service at 4 p.m. An additional visitation will be 9-10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with the Rev. Michael W. Penn officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice. Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
