Lavern Rose (Benne) Luecke-Toebben, 84, of Centertown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at her home. She was born on April 5, 1935, on a farm in Centertown; a daughter of Louis and Anna (Schmidt) Benne, who preceded her in death. She was united in marriage to Sylvester "George" Luecke on February 16, 1957, at St. Martin's Catholic Church. In 1980, George passed and a few years later she married, Alvin Toebben, a widower, combining their two families into one. Alvin's late wife, Genrose, was dear and treasured friend to Lavern before her passing. She was a 1953 graduate of St. Peter's Catholic School and soon after went to work at St. Mary's Hospital in the nursery ward. For several years, Lavern helped the nurses care and nurture the newborns. Lavern lost her vision as a young woman and became very involved in the National Federation for the Blind and was very active in the Jefferson City Chapter. Her blindness didn't stop her from raising a large family and perfecting her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Her daughter's spouses will greatly miss those. Lavern was also a member of the 4th degree St. Jude's Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. She prayed the rosary several time a day and was a devoted member of the St. Martin's parish. Her love and kindness will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Alvin; children: Janet Leonard Wieberg (David) of Centertown, Suzanne Bescheinen (Steven) of Loose Creek, Mary Ann Jacobs (Mike) of Jefferson City, Don Toebben (Grace) of St. Martins, Arleen Stehn (Tom) of West Plains, Ruth Stegeman (Jerry) of St. Martins, Patty Bock (Glen) of Westphalia, and Phyllis Prenger (Allan) of Taos; siblings: Juliann Rockers of St. Martins. Ruth Schaefer of Taos, Patty Whittle (Tom) of Centertown, Jerry Benne (Carol) of Centertown, Donnie Benne (Mary Ellen) of Centertown, and Betty Jo Luebbering (Bill) of St. Thomas; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren (with two on the way). Lavern was preceded in death by her daughter: Donna Porter; brother: Louis Benne; sister: Mary Lou Wieberg and granddaughter: Kelsey Toebben. Family and Friends will be received from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2019, at St. Martin's Catholic Church. Prayer Service will begin at 3:30 p.m. with Deacon Brad Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2019, at St. Martin's Catholic Church prior to Mass of Christian Burial, with Fr. Steven Jones officiating. Burial will follow at St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the National Federation of the Blind, Jefferson City Chapter or the St. Martin's Catholic School. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 West Main Street, Jefferson City, Missouri 65109 (573) 636-3838.
