Lieutenant Donald D. Schenewerk USN (Retired), 88, of California, Mo., passed away Friday, April 12, 2019. He was a resident of the Missouri Veterans Home Warrensburg at the time of his death. Don was born on July 11, 1930 in Peoria, Ill. to parents, Gladys Coale Tising of California, Mo. and Dorsey Schenewerk of Seattle, Wash., who preceded him in death. A sister, Patricia Wilson of Broken Arrow, Okla., also preceded him in death. Don served in the United States Navy from 1948-1969 and served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Commands include USS Boxer (CV-21), USS Oriskany (CV-34), USS Intrepid (CV-11), USS Independence (CVA-62), and was a Plank Owner of the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). Don was also President and founding member of the USS Kitty Hawk reunion committee. Don was an avid ham radio operator and directly responsible for placement of thousands of phone patches and emergency communications throughout several national disasters as well as connecting family members to loved ones back home during time of war, holding his call sign W0FPA and licensure until his death. After retirement from the US Navy, he earned his Masters of Education at the University of MO-Kansas City and spent 15 years as an educator serving as Principal for Strother High School in Oklahoma and Basehor High School in Kansas. He was a member of California Methodist Church, the VFW, DAV and Elks Club. Don is survived by four sons: Mark Schenewerk and wife Donna of Fountain Valley, Calif., Russell Schenewerk and wife Carla of Branson, Mo., Greg Schenewerk and wife Janie of San Diego, Calif. and Randy Schenewerk and wife Kathy of Houston, Texas; grandsons: Steven Schenewerk of San Francisco, Calif., David Schenewerk and wife Megan of Mission Viejo, Calif., Bryan Schenewerk and wife Claire of Ontario, Calif., Cole Schenewerk of Dallas, Texas, Ian Schenewerk of Branson, Mo., Alex Schenewerk of Branson, Mo. and Blayne Curry of Houston, Texas; granddaughters: Melissa Schenewerk and fiance Tim Gibbs of Houston, Torrey Schenewerk of San Diego, Calif.; great- grandsons: Kai Schenewerk of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Kade Schenewerk of Mission Viejo, Calif.; sister: Suzanne Einarsson and husband Inar of Pueblo, Colo.; aunt, Gene Coale; four nieces, two nephews and five cousins. Visitation will be at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California, Mo., on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California, Mo. on Friday April 19, 2019 at 11 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Flag Spring Cemetery.
