Mary Kathryne Spangler, 95, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at her home. She was born in Cumming, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Kathryne (Stitzell) Elliott. She was united in marriage in Princeton, Missouri on June 13, 1942, to Max Howery Spangler. Mr. Spangler passed away on April 21, 1984. Kathryne was very active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and Girl Scouts while in Des Moines, Iowa. A graduate of East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, she attended Drake University and Kiskey School of Business, Des Moines, Iowa. After moving from Iowa she was employed by the State of Missouri. She loved the theatre and appeared in numerous productions of the Jefferson City Little Theatre including plays and musicals. Kathryne was an active member of Learning in Retirement for many years. She served as Office Manager 1996-2000, and as President 1996-1999. With Learning in Retirement she formed the Creative Writers Club, taught, and was a member 1995-2005. In addition she taught and coordinated the Share in the Arts classes for Learning in Retirement. Kathryne also spoke at conferences including Institutes for Learning in Retirement as well as other engagements on organizing LIR affiliates. She designed the original Learning in Retirement logo for LIR-LU still in use today. In 2013, Kathryne was awarded a Lifetime Membership in Learning in Retirement "For Your Tireless Efforts, Outstanding Achievement and Valuable Contribution to Learning in Retirement." Always enjoying music, she sang with the Jefferson City Symphony Choir, and the Lincoln University Community Choir. She was a member of The Morning Music Club. Kathryne loved to crochet, and special to her, was making blankets for babies in the Afghans for Angels. Kathryne was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Jefferson City, where she was a member of the Social Concerns Committee. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (J.D.) Young, Holts Summit, Missouri, and Terri (Roy) Kadel, Mobile, Alabama; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her beloved kitty, Mickey. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Jefferson City. Services will follow at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Jefferson City with the Rev. Msgr. Donald Lammers officiating. Internment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Jefferson City, Missouri.
