Jose Julio Alas, 66, of Jefferson City, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. He was born on July 30, 1951 in Mexico DF (Distrito Federal), Mexico, a son of the late Manuel Alas and Carmen Martinez. Jose was born in Mexico by chance when his parents were visiting Mexico on a business trip. He lived in Cuba until the age of six, and then the family moved to Venezuela, after the death of his father, they moved to New York and then Miami, Florida. Jose is of three nationalities: Mexican, Cuban and American. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. At the age of five, Jose started playing soccer and became a professional soccer player for many years until an injury forced him to retire. He was a high school coach and a volunteer at Lincoln University as an Academic Coach. He is survived by his relative in love: Blanca Acosta; and two nephews: Gabriel "Manny" Matalon of Miami, FL and Luis Matalon of Atlanta, Ga. Jose was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Jane Matalon. Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Celebration of Life will follow at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors with Rev. David Phelps officiating. Expressions of Sympathy may be made to the family.
