Neta Mae (Spurgeon) Holmes, 96, formerly of Kahoka, Mo., died, Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Sunrise on Clayton in St Louis, Mo. She was born November 1, 1921, in rural Clark County Missouri to William Edward Spurgeon (08/07/1891 - 02/24/1981) and Cynthia Jane (Baker) Spurgeon (02/02/1889 - 08/30/1969). She married Eston Allen Holmes on May 13, 1942, in Durant, Oklahoma. At an early age Neta Mae confessed her faith in the Master and joined the Providence Baptist Church in NE Missouri. Neta Mae worked with Eston, her husband, in farming, raising hogs and cattle. She worked at Sheller Globe from 1965 to 1969. During that time she became acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Jones, owner of Kahoka Flowers in Kahoka, Mo. She decided to try florist work and completed Gladys Turner Florist School in St. Louis in 1969. After graduation, she worked for Mr. and Mrs. Jones and in Jan. 1971, she became owner of Kahoka Flowers. In Feb. 1978, she added women's clothing and changed the name to Kahoka Flowers and Fashions. Kahoka Flowers and Fashions became well known in the Tri State Area and Neta Mae operated it until her retirement in Oct. 1991. She returned to the farm and then moved to Jefferson City, Mo. in September 1995 to be near her son James and his family. Neta Mae subsequently sold the farm on Sept. 21, 1996. Neta Mae loved gardening, growing flowers, sewing, reading, dancing and taking trips by car or by bus. She especially enjoyed spending time with family. She was a life member of the D.A.V Auxiliary. Survivors include one son, James S. Holmes and his wife Mary Anne (Kavanagh) Holmes of St Louis, Mo.; granddaughter, Tami S. Waldron of St Louis, Mo. and her two sons, Samuel W. Waldron (11) and Benjamin S. Waldron (6), and granddaughter Michele A. Holmes and Jason Kempa of Festus, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Ida C. Holmes of Kahoka, Mo.; sister-in-law, Blanche Holmes of Keokuk, Iowa; nephews, nieces and many cousins and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edward Spurgeon (02/24/1981) and Cynthia Jane (Baker) Spurgeon (08/30/1969); her brother, James Martin Spurgeon (04/05/1935); her husband, Eston Allen Holmes (07/16/1998) and her son, Allen Lee Holmes (12/27/2005). Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, with services to follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka Mo. Burial will be in the Kahoka Cemetery after the funeral.
