John William Hilke, 78, of Freeburg, departed this life on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at his residence. He was born November 18, 1938, in Argyle, Missouri, a son of the late Henry A. and Ella (Sudheimer) Hilke. John attended the Visitation Catholic School in Vienna until the 8th grade. He worked for the Vienna MFA exchange and later drove a truck for Quaker Window Products for six years. John joined the Army Reserves in 1961 and served until 1966. On June 28, 1963, he met the love of his life, Marie Holtmeyer. On February 4, 1964, he bought and opened the "Hilke Caf and Packaged Liquor". John and Marie were joined in Holy Matrimony on October 24, 1964, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Freeburg. In 1965, John joined the Freeburg Volunteer Fire Department and was later appointed Freeburg Fire Chief and served as Chief for over 50 years. He was very much involved in the design of the new Freeburg firehouse as plans came forward to build and property got purchased in 1998. On December 4, 1965, he joined the Freeburg Lions Club and was a charter member until present. In 1966 he became an Osage County Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff and in later years was a Sergeant on the Freeburg Police Department until 1986. He was well known for transporting individuals to various doctor appointments and hospitals if they were injured. John helped transport young men from the Freeburg area to the St. Louis Airport so they could be deported to Vietnam. In 1972, John and Marie opened a second business, "Hilke's Car Wash" and closed it in 1983. In 1974, John and Marie started Hilke's Ice Company and it is still in operation today. In 1975, he was one of the few that started the Maries-Osage Ambulance District and both John and Marie in August of 1975 became certified EMTs. He worked on the Maries-Osage Ambulance District for several years and served on the Board of Directors. He then became a part of the Osage-Maries Ambulance and served for over 30 years and was on the Board of Directors. On February 7, 1977, the City of Freeburg declared it to be "John Hilke Day" because he did so much for the community. He helped design the new ambulance shed in the fall of 1992 in Vienna, Mo. John joined the American Legion Post 317 Paul Hasenbeck, Freeburg, 1986-present. He was a member of the Red Cross Gallon Club. John was on the Freeburg City Council from 1992-2012, was Mayor of Freeburg, and was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Freeburg. John was a member of the following ice associations: Missouri Valley Ice Association, 1980-present, and served on the board from 1992-95 and President from 1996-97; Southwestern Ice Association from 1995-present; Great Lakes Ice Association, 2015-present; International Packaged Ice Association (IPIA) 2016-present. While he was President of the MO Valley Ice Association he fought at the State Capitol for tougher sanitation guidelines and went up against the Missouri Insurance Board of Workmen's Compensation Code for the ice industry and won. In 2007, John was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from MO Valley Ice Association. John received many awards from the Red Cross, the MO State Highway Patrol and the ice associations he was involved with for all his help throughout the years. John is survived by his loving wife, Marie, of the home; one daughter: Renee Veltrop (Leon) of Jefferson City; one son: Laron Hilke of Freeburg; two brothers: Dan Hilke (Cindy) and Jim Hilke (Sandi), all of St. Peters; one sister, Pat Hilke of St. Peters; six grandchildren: Lisa Moore, Julie Veltrop, Ronald Veltrop, Marissa Veltrop, all of Jefferson City, Zachary West of Chillicothe, Katie Rae West of Vienna; and three great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Taylor Hollandsworth, and Sophie Veltrop, all of Jefferson City. John was preceded in death by his father: Henry A., 11/4/1964; his mother: Ella, 12/25/2003; five sisters: Irene Stratman, 7/25/2015; Marie Kloeppel, 2/4/2015; Theresa Willibrand, 7/3/2016; Helen Backes, 1/8/2007; Emily Hilke, 4/2/1972; one brother; Henry J., 12/1/1993; and one daughter-in-law: Penny Hilke, 7/9/2017. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Freeburg with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Freeburg with Fr. Bill Debo officiating. Interment will follow in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Freeburg Volunteer Fire Department in John's memory.
