Seth Benjamin Backues, age 30, of Freeburg, departed this life on Monday, September 4, 2017, in the Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City. He was born on June 18, 1987, at Jefferson City, a son of David Chestley and Joy Maria (James) Backues. Seth was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Freeburg. He had attended Holy Family School, Freeburg, graduating from the 8th grade, and then was a 2005 graduate of the Maries R-1 High School, Vienna. He was a factory worker at various places in the area. Seth enjoyed gardening with his James grandparents, helping to raise cucumbers and tomatoes. He also enjoyed helping his grandpa Gerald fry fish and chicken for family gatherings and just being with his family, including his cousins. His favorite activity, recently, was playing with his son, Michael, whom he loved dearly. Those left to mourn the passing of Seth include: his son, Michael Charles Lee Backues and his significant other and mother of his son, Haley Michelle Lewis, both of the home; his mother, Joy Maria James, Freeburg; his father, David Chestley Backues, Belle; one brother, Jared Henry Backues and his wife Taylor, O'Fallon; his maternal grandmother, Wilma James, Freeburg; his paternal grandfather, Delmar Backues, Belle; uncles; aunts; cousins, and other relatives and friends. Seth was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Charles Gerald James on November 12, 2015; his paternal grandmother, Lillian (Ament) Backues in May of 1991; and his step-father, Kevin Welschmeyer in July of 2007. Visitation for Seth will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2017 and from 9-10 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017, all in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4277 Highway U, Rich Fountain, MO 65070. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4277 Highway U, Rich Fountain, MO 65070, with the Rev. William D. Debo as the Celebrant. Interment will be in the James Community Cemetery near Vienna. Memorials are suggested per the wishes of the family with envelopes available at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rich Fountain, or in care of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, P.O.
