JoAnn Cheatom, 65, of Jefferson City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Capital Region Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born on September 18, 1952, the daughter of Archie Hugo and Margaret Ann (Schmitz) Bates. She was united in marriage on September 2, 1988 in Jefferson City, Mo., to Kenneth Cheatom, who survives of the home. She was a 1970 graduate of Jefferson City High School and worked for the Missouri Department of Employment Security for over 25 years. JoAnn enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a vital part of her mother's caregiving and enjoyed the peace of the outdoors while fishing with her husband, Kenny. She had a courageous, fighting spirit surviving a liver transplant, lung lobe removal and a brain tumor. Even though she succumbed to her battle with cancer, she was still able to give the gift of sight even after her passing. She is also survived by her mother: Margaret Ann Bates of Jefferson City; two brothers: Larry (Karlene) Bates of Jefferson City and Mike (Cassandra) Bates of Jefferson City; one niece: Jeni (Aaron) Hemmel of Jefferson City; and three nephews: Brad (Jodi) Bates of Jefferson City, Michael (Mendy) Sundermeyer of Jefferson City, and Mark (Rob) Sundermeyer of Philadelphia, Pa. She was preceded in death by her father: Archie Hugo Bates; one brother: Jerry Bates; and one nephew: Christopher Bates. Family will receive friends for a Celebration of JoAnn's life from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Houser-Millard Funeral Chapel. Interment will be private for the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Family of JoAnn Cheatom or the American Cancer Society.
