Henry G. "Sonny" Gretlein III, 69, of Blue Springs, Missouri, formerly of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, at Adams Street Place. He was born on September 29, 1947, the son of Henry George Gretlein Jr. and Dorothy (Manning) Gretlein. Sonny graduated from Cole R-5 High School in Eugene, Missouri, in 1965. He went on to get his Bachelors (1969) and Masters (1979) in Education from Lincoln University. He received his Specialist in Education degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1982. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard from 1970 until 1976. Sonny always had a love for teaching. His career started in New Bloomfield as a Teacher/Coach (1969-70) and also was a teacher/coach at Cole R-5 High School (1971-75) where he graduated. He continued his career at Linn High School (1977-79) as a teacher until he took the Assistant High School Principal position at Brookfield High School (1979-80). He first became a Principal at NE Randolph County High School (1980-82) in Cairo, Missouri, Stockton High School (1982-1992) and Nevada Senior High School (1992-95). He was Superintendent at Liberal R-2 School District from 1995-2000 and retired as a teacher at the Missouri Division of Youth Services in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Sonny was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City. He is survived by his mother: Dorothy Gretlein of Jefferson City; one sister: Patsy Hoeferlin (husband Tom) of Jefferson City; two brothers: Richard D. Gretlein (wife Shirley) of Jefferson City and David J. Gretlein (wife Peggy) of Jefferson City. He was preceded in death by his father: Henry George Gretlein Jr. on December 4, 2007. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home in Jefferson City. Funeral Services will follow at 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, with Pastor Sam Powell officiating. Entombment will follow at the Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Calvary Lutheran High School in Jefferson City, or the Liberal R-2 School District - Student Scholarship.
