Joyce Leonard Volkert

Joyce Leonard Volkert, 90, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on November 28, 1925, in Columbia, Illinois, the son of the late Christian Leonard and Consuelo Joy Smith Volkert. He was married on June 1, 1943, in St. Louis to Fay Ingram, who preceded him in death on May 22, 2009. Mr. Volkert was a 1943 graduate of Columbia (Illinois) High School, and a 1952 graduate of St. Louis College of Pharmacy where he served as an adjunct professor for several years. He retired in 1990 as a pharmacist with Overland Medical Center Pharmacy in St. Louis County, after a professional career of 40 years. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps where he held the rank of Sergeant. He was a member St. Martin Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Survivors include two children, Suzanne (Dr. Harry) Richter, Jefferson City, and Tim Volkert, Mokane, Missouri; one step-son, Daniel (Kathleen) Klott, St. Peters, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Volkert, Jefferson City. He was preceded in death by two sons, Alexis Volkert and Brian Volkert; and one sister, Carroll Vogt. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 26, 2016, at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Shariya Molegoda officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
