Dr. Jerome H. Schmidt, 86, of Wardsville, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 18, 1929, in Osage Bend, the son of the late John and Clara (Grafe) Schmidt. On December 29, 1966, Jerry was united in marriage in Belleville, Illinois, to Elaine Haudrich, who survives at their home. After grade school at Osage Bend, he was employed at St. Mary's Hospital working in the lab, while attending St. Peter High School. After learning lab technology at the hospital and seeing the medical profession in action this became his goal and he secured employment as a lab tech at Missouri Pacific Hospital for the years of college and med school at St. Louis University. Following internship in St. Louis another year of residency was completed in Pathology at Indiana University after which he was inducted as Captain in the USAF MC as pathologist at Lowry AFB in Denver, Co. After the military duty was completed he finished residency in St. Louis in Urology and then practiced in Grand Junction, Co for a year. He then returned to Jefferson City in 1963 and practiced Urology until retirement in 2000, having formed Urology Care Inc which had grown to four physicians by that time. Jerry was grateful to have been a staff member at all the local hospitals and several outlying hospitals and to have been a pioneer in seed implant surgery for prostate cancer in Central Missouri and in helping bring the DO and MD physicians together. Jerry was a member of the St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church, AMA and the Southwest Urological Association. In his younger years, he was an avid quail and groundhog hunter and also he enjoyed working on his farms and teaching his grandchildren survival skills and sharing his vast knowledge of history and life experiences with them. Along with his wife, Elaine, of 49 years, he is survived by his daughter: Nikki Kolb and husband Dan of Osage Bend; brother: Alvin Schmidt and wife Odelia of Osage Bend; and grandchildren: Whitney Kolb, Hunter Kolb, Danielle Kolb and Brian Schmidt Jr. He was preceded in death by his son: Brian Schmidt; brother: Norbert Schmidt and sister-in-law: Delores Schmidt. Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Houser-Millard Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016, at St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church with Fr. Ignazio C. Medina officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Cemetery in Osage Bend.
