Sylvanus Hoecker

Sylvanus "Enie" Hoecker, age 84, of St. Thomas, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at his home. He was born in St. Thomas on July 28, 1931, son of the late Herman and Gertrude (Luebbering) Hoecker. On October 29, 1955, in St. Thomas, he married Eldora Schmidt, who survives at the home. Enie honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He had many professions including a carpenter for Goldammer Construction, operated a dairy farm with his wife, Eldora, an independent carpenter and handyman, and also served as maintenance man for St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and School. He was later employed with Patio Chef for nine years until his retirement in 1996. Enie was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Thomas, Perpetual Adoration at St. Stanislaus Church in Wardsville for many years, and an original member of St. Thomas Volunteer Fire Department. He also served multiple terms as a member of the Public Water District #5 and was a life member of the Jefferson City VFW and DAV. He enjoyed cutting wood and mowing grass. Enie loved spending time with his family, especially his three granddaughters. In addition to his loving wife, Eldora, he is also survived by three children, Mary Wieberg and husband Dave of Westphalia, Danny Hoecker of St. Thomas, and Theresa Veit and husband Ron of St. Thomas; three granddaughters, Adrienne Wieberg, Megan Wieberg, and Brenda Veit; one sister-in-law, Betty Hoecker of St. Thomas; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Schmidt of Florissant and Dan Schmidt and wife Ellen of Jefferson City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leander "Pete" Hoecker; sister-in-law, Geneva Plassmeyer and husband Roman; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schmidt. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Rev. Jeremy Secrist will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., on Tuesday, July 26, at the church. A morning visitation will also be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
