George Pierce Massengale

George Pierce Massengale Jr., 86, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born October 7, 1930, in St. Louis to George Pierce Sr., and Emily Ames Massengale. George was a native of St. Louis and served in the Air Force from 1950-1954. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University (BA-English) and Washington University in St. Louis (MA-Economics). George was employed as a cub-pilot with Mississippi Valley Barge Line, an appraiser with Wenzlick Commercial Appraisals in St. Louis, and as an instructor at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. He was interested in the history of the St. Louis and Tennessee River Packet Company, a steamboat line started and run by his grandfather, Captain John E. Massengale. George is survived by two brothers: Robert (Betty Jo) Massengale of Jefferson City, and James (Tracey) Massengale of Newberry, Calif.; a nephew, David (Sarah) Massengale of Salem; a niece, Debra (Cotton) Walker of Jefferson City; a great-niece, Jacquelyn Walker of Jefferson City; and three great-nephews, Quinn Walker of Jefferson City, and Orion Massengale and Zane Massengale, both of Salem. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Robin Massengale. A private family burial will take place in St. Louis.
