Howard Charles "Slim" Walther, 81, of Schubert passed away Saturday, December 19, 2015, at SSM Healthcare-St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City. He was born on December 5, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo., to Clara K. Walther, who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage on July 22, 1956, in Schubert to Dolores Viesman, who survives of the home. He proudly served our county in the United States Army Reserves from 1957-1963. He was a graduate of Jefferson City High School. He was a Corrections and Training Officer for the Missouri Department of Corrections, retiring in 1998. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Schubert. Howard was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed rebuilding Allis-Chalmers tractors and small gasoline engines. He liked to attend Thrasher and Tractor Shows. He volunteered with the Taos Fire Department and a member of the Missouri Corrections Officers Association. He was a member of American Legion Post # 5 and the Eagles Post# 2693. In 1990, Howard found a 1870 S & S antique horse-drawn carriage in an estate auction in Miller County. It was unique in having curved glass like the old china cabinets. Reid Millard restored the carriage and it has been used in many different funeral services including the reburial of Jesse James in 1995, many different celebrities. The carriage is a Hallmark for Millard Family Chapels. Howard is also survived by one son, Randall (Sandra) Walther of Schubert; two daughters, Pamela (Donnie Schaefer) and Patricia (Dennis Moses) Walther of Schubert; and three grandchildren, Desiree Moses, Shianne Walther and Kail Walther. Family will receive friends from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Taos. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schubert, Mo., with Rev. Gerald Scheperle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. John's Lutheran Church in Schubert, Mo., or the Callaway Hills Animal Shelter in New Bloomfield, Mo.
