January 14th, 2014 in Obituaries

Joseph Bernard Martin Veit, 79, of Holts Summit, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was born November 22, 1934, in Osage Bend, Missouri, a son of the late Frank H. and Mathilda M. (Twehous) Veit. On June 1, 1957, Joe was united in marriage in Osage Bend, to Bernadette C. Dickneite, who preceded him in death on February 4, 1997. Through the years, Joe hauled milk, worked for Central Dairy, Commercial Carthage Company, Byron Wickam Trucking; worked 20 years as Terminal Manager for Transport Delivery Company; and drove for Durham Bus Services. Joe was also in charge of the building and grounds at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Holts Summit. After retiring at Transport Delivery Company, Joe started driving a school bus for Durham Bus Services at New Bloomfield Schools, the Special Learning Center, and Kirchner State School. He really loved his "job" and the kids really loved him. He treated each one as if they were his own grandchildren. Joe had been a fixture at St. Andrew Catholic Church for over 30 years. If you had anything to do with St. Andrew's then you knew Joe. From setting up the chairs for every Mass at the beginning, to the Cemetery Committee, serving on the Parish Council, Building and Grounds Committee, fundraising for the church, overseeing the building of the church, constant work for the Knights of Columbus Fall Festival, and who can forget the famous St. Andrew's Fish Fries. Joe was also a member of the St. Andrew Knights of Columbus Council 8400. Joe is survived by a son: Christopher Veit of the home; two grandchildren: Ethan Veit and Kaitlyn Veit of the home; one brother: James Veit (wife Arlene) of Palmyra, Mo.; a daughter-in-law: Theresa Veit of Holts Summit; and a sister-in-law: Lillian Veit of Wardsville. Joe was also preceded in death by two sisters: Dolores Holtmeyer and her husband Stub, and Anistine Buechter and her husband Ben; and one brother: Francis Veit. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Holts Summit, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Msgr. Gregory L. Higley officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Andrew Church Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Joe Veit Grandchildren's Educational Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of SLATER-MILLARD Family Funeral Chapel, 540 South Summit Drive, Holts Summit, MO 65043. (573) 896-5959.
