Marian B. Nichols

Mrs. Marian B. Nichols, age 83 years, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Capital Region Medical Center. Marian was born on April 24, 1930, in Lemay, Mo., a daughter of Otto J. and Jennie (Milcie) Lassauer. She was married on November 20, 1954, in Jefferson City, to Luther Bruce Nichols, who preceded her in death on May 1, 2006. Marian was raised in St. Louis, Mo. from ages 7-18 at the German Protestant Orphan's Home (Evangelical Children's Home) and graduated from Normandy High School. In 1948, she relocated to Jefferson City to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Bernice J. and William E. Gehrels and was employed as a bookkeeper at Tweedie Footwear Corporation for several years. When her daughter was born she became a homemaker, and during that time, she was a Girl Scout troop leader and she groomed poodles in the home. She later became a loan officer with Missouri State Employees Credit Union retiring in 1993. She was a member and Sunday School Teacher at Central United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693. Marian was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and enjoyed various crafts. She was known for making Christmas ornaments for family and friends. She cherished time with family, especially spending the winter months from 1993-2005 with her husband in Mission, Texas. Survivors include: her daughter, Barbara (Allen) Schmutzler of Jefferson City; her step-grandchildren, Brock Schmutzler of Columbia, Mo. and Amber (Rodrigo) Gonzales of Jefferson City; her step-great-grandchildren, Nolan, Ethan, and Emily Gonzales; her sisters-in-law, Betty Crum Martin of Mexico, Mo. and Janet Nichols of Holts Summit, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Jack D. Britt of Emporia, Kan.; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Vaneta and Wayne Cole, Charles and Nancy Beatte and Pat Pritchett. In addition to her parents, Marian was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice J. Britt and Loraine M. Lassauer; and four brothers-in-law, William E. Gehrels, Jewel E. Nichols, William J. Nichols and Andrew T. Crum Sr. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Coletta Eichenberger officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Central United Church of Christ or the Evangelical Children's Home in St. Louis, Mo.
