Betty Sue Gross, age 72, formerly of Jefferson City, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, in her granddaughter's home. Betty was born on July 10, 1940, in Walker County, Alabama, daughter of Alvie Swindle and Mary Boshell Swindle. She was married to Bige Gross on March 7, 1955, in Fulton, Miss. She was mother to one son, Bige Byron Gross (Stephanie) of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Betty grew up in Walker County, Alabama and moved to Missouri in the early 1980s. She also lived in Tacoma, Washington and Oak Hill, Florida, following the death of her husband, Bige, in 2001. She was employed at St. Mary's Hospital in the cafeteria for 12 years until her retirement in 1999. She lived at Hyder Apartments in Jefferson City until the time of her illness earlier this year. She will be remembered for being a great story teller, her lively sense of humor, being a survivor and source of inspiration for many, being a great lover of people, and her amazing cooking abilities. Betty's greatest joy in life was being a grandmother to her four granddaughters, Lori Anderson (Michael), Karen Snyder (Joseph), Joy Pritchett (Terry) and Jessica Janowiak (Joshua). She also had 10 great-grandchildren: Andrew, Jacob, Jenna, Bryan, Emma, Ezekial, Heidi, Emily, Izak and Baby J. Betty had a beloved companion, Princess, her toy poodle. Other survivors include her beloved siblings: Jo Lane Parrish (Jerry), Herbert Swindle (Mary), and her "baby sister", Rita Jean Haggstrom (Roy); her nieces Raylyn Gomez, Kimberly Gomez, and Casey Haggstrom; her nephews Eric Gross, Randy Gomez, and Troy Gross. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Johnny Ray Swindle (Joyce), sister, Johnnie Fay Gomez (Albert) and her dear friend, Russell Rabe. A life celebration will be held at a later date.
