Donald L. Hiatte

Mr. Donald L. Hiatte, age 80 years, of New Bloomfield, Mo., passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at the Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton, Mo. Don was born on December 4, 1932, in Marion, Mo., a son of Albert and Margaret Allison Hiatte. He was married on August 24, 1950, in Fulton, Mo. to Barbara Johnson. A long time resident of the central Missouri area, Don was a 1950 graduate of New Bloomfield High School and a 1958 graduate of the University of Missouri - Columbia with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He enjoyed his time at the university and remained a life member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association. He served in the United States Army with the Occupying Forces in Germany during the Korean War. He also graduated from the Command and General Staff School. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he served over 30 years in the United States Army Reserve and with the Missouri Army National Guard rising to the rank of Colonel. He also helped as the state director of the Selective Service for over 30 years. Don was employed for the majority of his career as a civil engineer with the Missouri Highway Department that included four years as District Chief Engineer of District One in St. Joseph, Mo. He worked for the department for over 30 years and retired in 1989. During his career he was involved with many professional organizations including: Order of the Engineer, National Institute of Engineering Ethics, Past President of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and Past President of the National Council of Examiners for Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Jefferson City where he was Deacon Emeritus, a past Sunday School Superintendent and led a Sunday School class for many years. He was also a member of the Jefferson City Rotary Club; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Sone Post 1003; the Red Cross of Constantine; and the Jefferson Lodge #43, A.F. & A.M. where he served as past Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Missouri. Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Barbara Hiatte; one son, Patrick Hiatte and his wife Sandra of New Bloomfield, Mo.; two daughters, Kathleen Wooderson and her husband Stephen of Waconia, Minn. and Erin Schuler and her husband Gary of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Sarah Cotant and her husband Andrew, Hannah Wooderson, Leah Dussold and her husband John, Faye Scott and her husband Nick, and Matthew Schuler and his wife Nicole; four great-grandchildren, Ruthie Cotant, Claire Schuler, Emma Dussold, Clay Scott, and he was eagerly awaiting the birth of another great-grandson next month; and one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hiatte of New Bloomfield, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, A.J. Hiatte. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, with a Masonic service to be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Freeman Chapel under the auspices of the Jefferson Lodge, #43. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church or the Missouri Veterans Home Foundation in Mexico, Mo.
