Grover W. Van Winkle

Mr. Grover W. Van Winkle, age 71 years, of Tebbetts, Mo., died Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Four Seasons Nursing Center in Sedalia, Mo. Grover was born March 29, 1941, in Hoxie, Arkansas the son of Grover and Grace Kennedy Van Winkle. He was married on July 5, 1966, in Bamberg, Germany to Etelka M. Schneeberger. Grover served in the United States Army for 20 years until his retirement in 1979. He served as a medic in the Vietnam conflict and was honored for bravery with a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars with Valor, and two Arcom medals with Valor. After retiring from the military, Grover was employed as a Nurse at the Missouri State Penitentiary until his retirement in 1991. Grover enjoyed reading and spending time with his family. Survivors include: his wife, Etelka Van Winkle; three daughters, Karoline Schneeberger of California, Angelika Kelley of St. James, Mo., and Victoria Welschmeyer and her husband Ted of Tebbetts, Mo.; two sons, Gerhard Van Winkle of Sedalia, Mo., William Van Winkle of Charleston, Mo., and; one sister, Helen Oberkramer of Illinois; two brothers, Harry Pilgrim of Little Rock, Ark. and Michael Lorch of Pearl, Miss.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Van Winkle; one daughter, Alice Van Winkle Johnson; one sister, Alma Forderer; and one brother, Edward Isom. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Summit Memorial Park in Holts Summit, Mo. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
