Velma A. Shelnutt

Mrs. Velma A. Shelnutt, age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. Velma was born April 15, 1927, in Cedar City, Mo., the daughter of Jessie V. and Lillian P. Steinmetz Hughes. She was married on July 14, 1946, in Cedar City, Mo., to Billy G. Shelnutt, who preceded her in death on May 25, 2012. A resident of the Jefferson City area for part of her life, Velma was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson City High School. A homemaker, Velma had been employed with the Missouri Division of Employment Security in the Accounting Dept. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Holts Summit, Mo. Velma enjoyed reading, but most importantly, spending time with family and friends. Survivors include: her daughter, Julie A. Conkin and her husband Mark of Bolingbrook, Ill.; one brother, Norris E. Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Kyle J. Kukuk and Kory Kukuk, both of Bolingbrook, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Richard Hughes. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel with Chaplain Jim Mueller officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions in Velma's name directly to a church or charity of their choice.
