Doyce C. Cardwell

Mr. Doyce C. Cardwell, age 90 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at his home. Doyce was born December 2, 1922, in Kaiser, Mo., the son of Charles L. and Ida Williams Cardwell. He was married on June 7, 1947, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Betty Gangwish. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Doyce was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson City High School. Doyce served in the United States Army from February 14, 1943 until December 8, 1945. He was involved in the Battle of Normandy, the Battle of Northern France, the Battle of the Rhineland, and the Battle of Central Europe. He participated in the liberation of twelve concentration camps, including Krakow and Auschwitz. He was awarded four Bronze Stars for all four campaigns and also the Good Conduct Medal. He was the owner and operator of Cardwell Moving and Storage for many years and also owned Cardwell Liquor Store. After retirement, he provided part time delivery for local pharmacies. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Sone Post 1003, and was a past member of the B.P.O. of Elks and the Knights of Columbus. Doyce loved to spend time with his family and friends, reminiscing about his experiences in World War II specifically landing on the beaches of Normandy. He also enjoyed walking in Jefferson City parks and always had a positive attitude and a great sense of humor. Survivors include: his former wife, Betty Cardwell; three daughters, Michele Hill of Jefferson City, Mo., Kathy Vache and her husband Jim of Jefferson City, Mo., and Jody Williams and her husband Sam of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Carey Vache Schmitz of Springfield, Mo., Shannon Vache of Osage Beach, Mo., Jacob Vache of Jefferson City, Mo., Christopher Hill of Dallas, Texas, Leslie Williams of St. Louis, Mo., and Kelly Williams of St. Louis, Mo.; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Robert Cardwell, Curtis Cardwell, Clifford Cardwell, and Rollin Cardwell; and four sisters, Opal Vieth, Dessie Huddleston, Ginger Vieth, and Olive Rothove. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Wounded Warriors or the Mid-Missouri Honor Flights.
