John J. "Johnny" Muessig Jr., 91, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013, at St. Joseph's Bluffs. He was born September 1, 1921, near Pilot Grove, Missouri, a son of the late John J. and Augusta (Diel) Muessig. He attended St. Peter and Paul grade school and was a 1940 graduate of Boonville High School in Boonville, Missouri, and went on to graduate from St. Louis University in 1948. On September 6, 1947, Johnny was united in marriage in Glasgow, Missouri, to Rita Kallmeyer, who preceded him in death on October 28, 2009. Johnny managed A&P stores prior to joining the United States Navy. He started Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, and was a veteran of World War II. He served as a 2nd Class Machinist Mate, and then as a Naval Pilot, flying patrol bombers. He worked for the Fuller Brush Company selling in downtown St. Louis, and later transferred to Jefferson City as a Field Manager. Johnny managed three Esser Stores in Jefferson City for two years. He was with KWOS Radio for more than 35 years, doing the morning show, the M.F.A. neighbors remote, disc jockey, sales, and later was a part owner of the station. Early on he was a member of the Frankie and Johnny Band. As a member of the "Johnny Boys", he played dances in the central Missouri area. During his later years, Johnny enjoyed jamming with his friends at the VFW, and started a weekly jam session at Heisinger Bluffs. He was a flight instructor at the Jefferson City Airport, and President of the Capital City Flying Club. He was also a member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 1003; a member and Past President of the Cosmo Club; a member of the American Legion; a Gold member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles; and a member of the Holy Name Society. Johnny is survived by seven sons: Larry (Nga) Muessig of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Dan (Jane) Muessig of Jefferson City, Missouri, Ken (Beverly) Muessig of Foley, Texas, Mark (Patsy) Muessig of Overland Park, Kansas, Matt (Darlene) Muessig of Jefferson City, Missouri, Curt Muessig of Independence, Missouri, Dennis (Cindy) Muessig of St. Charles, Missouri; three daughters: Carolyn Karst of Jefferson City, Missouri, Janice (Leroy) Guthrie of Kansas City, Missouri, Anita (Mike) Dwyer of Chesterfield, Missouri, two sisters: Alice Flanigan of Liberty, Missouri and Lealla Blum of Clearwater, Florida; a sister-in-law: Nancy (Mike) O'Connor of Shawnee, Kansas; a special friend: Grace Lansford of Jefferson City, Missouri; 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son: Jerry "Dobie" Muessig; a son-in-law: Girard Karst; a granddaughter: Amy Muessig; and two brothers: Maurice Muessig and Thomas Muessig. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor David Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Helias Catholic High School or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
