David Douglas LePage

David Douglas LePage, age 69 years, of Eugene, Mo., passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at his home surrounded by family. David was born March 16, 1944, in Jefferson City, Mo. a son of Henry G. and Elora LePage. If David had been born one day later he would have been named Patrick for St. Patrick's Day, but instead he was born a day earlier and his parents named him after war heroes General Dwight David Eisenhower and General Douglas MacArthur. David resided in Central Missouri most of his life spending the occasional winter at Lake Havasu, Arizona improving his golf game. He graduated high school from Jefferson City in 1962, where he played for his beloved Jays. After graduating from high school he attended Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State in Springfield. He later transferred to Central Missouri State, Warrensburg where he obtained a degree in Administration of Criminal Justice. After college, David began his career with the Missouri State Highway Patrol on October 15, 1965, as a uniform patrolman in Sweet Springs, Missouri. In 1973, he was promoted to the rank of corporal and transferred to Lexington, Mo. where he served as an assistant zone commander. In 1978 he was transferred into the Criminal Division and moved into the Lee's Summit, Mo. area. He was sent to New York where he was trained in the use of the polygraph. For the next 13 years he conducted criminal investigations, worked undercover, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1980. It was during this time that many of David's stories developed. Stories he entertained hundreds with on a daily basis. Each time he told his tales the stories slightly shifted. His family and loved ones are each convinced they know the real story. His tales will be retold and revisited for years to come. Towards the end of his Patrol years, David was transferred back to his hometown, Jefferson City, Mo. He retired from the MSHP and embarked on a new career with American Family Insurance Company conducting insurance fraud investigations. During his career he moved from the Jefferson City family farm to Lake Ozark. He soon tired of the weekend noise and built his dream home at Redfield Golf Course in Eugene, Mo. In May 2008, David retired from American Family and began his next career as a full time golfer. His love for golf took him to Arizona once a year to improve his game, but it did nothing to curb his tall tales. Besides golf, David loved hunting, fishing, Jefferson City Jays, farming and mowing the lawn. If he wasn't on the golf course he could easily be found in his fishing boat, hunting pheasants, taking care of his family farm that he cherished, or riding around on his lawn mower. He had the best yard in town. David was a member and past president of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693 and the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5. He was a devoted father and grandfather to his two daughters and his four grandchildren. Survivors include: his daughters, Cindy Cook (husband Brent) Oklahoma City, Okla. and Julie Maassen (husband Jeff) Jefferson City, Mo.; three brothers, Paul "PW" LePage of Jefferson City, Tom LePage (wife Gert) of Russellville, and Julian "Fuzzy" LePage (wife Carol) of Warroad, Minn.; four grandchildren, Holden Cook, Annabelle Maassen, Tripp Maassen and Quinn Maassen; and longtime friend, Sandy Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elora LePage; twin sister, Emily LePage; brother, John LePage; and sister, Elora "Sissy" LePage. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013, and at the First United Methodist Church from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Daniel Hilty officiating.
