Shirley Wirtel

Shirley (Halliday) Wirtel, 80, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Benchmark Healthcare of St. Charles. She was born in Atlanta, Ga., January 25, 1933, to Benjamin and Ellanora (Barnette) Halliday. She was married to Wilferd Joseph Wirtel on August 18, 1956, in St. Louis, Mo. Shirley was very active in church for many years. She taught tap dance, ballet, and acrobatics in St. Louis, Mo. She taught homeschool roller skating at Skate World in Branson, Mo., for over five years. Shirley belonged to the Skateworld Skate Club and skated in many meets and regionals winning several plaques, medals and trophies. She also received the President Award for skating and was put into the Hall of Fame of M.D.A. She is survived by three children, John Edmond Wirtel, Carroll Sue Wirtel Hull, and William Joseph Wirtel; and a step-daughter, Betty Olson. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Donald Halliday. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Forsyth Whelchel Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Ozarks Memorial Park, Branson, Mo.
