George Albert Schmutzler, 85, of Jefferson City, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at his home. He was born March 17, 1928, in Osage Bend, Missouri, a son of the late Hugo J. and Clara M. (Veit) Schmutzler. On February 11, 1950, George was united in marriage in Osage Bend, Missouri, to Hazel I. Gilpin, who survives at their home. George was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 513. As a heavy equipment operator, he worked at the Callaway Nuclear Plant from the time construction started until it opened, and also on the construction of area highways. Over the years, he enjoyed operating anything with a steering wheel and a seat at Kenny Propst's farm. He also had worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and the Osage Bend Gravel Plant. As his children were growing up, he did whatever it took to provide for his family. He was a member of St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church in Osage Bend. George enjoyed cutting wood, dancing, fishing, mushroom hunting, farming, telling stories, and spending time with his family. Along with his wife of 63 years, George is also survived by seven children: Janet Schmutzler (Joe Wilbers) of Wardsville; Joyce Hildebrand (Larry) of Mission, Texas; Doug Schmutzler of Osage Bend; Debra Taber of Jefferson City; Susan Bass (Perry) of Osage Bend; Sandy Propst (Greg) of Honey Creek; Pat Schmutzler (Kathy) of Osage Bend; one brother: Albert Schmutzler (Irene) of Jefferson City; one sister: Anna Mae Schmitz (Richard) of Jefferson City; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. George and Hazel also included in their family long time friends Dave Marthers and Sandy Lynn of Jefferson City. He is also preceded in death by two infant children: Terry Schmutzler and Tracy Schmutzler; one brother: Leonard Schmutzler; two sisters: Rosemary Wolfe and Betty Lou Rustemeyer; and two sons-in-law: Chuck Taber and Dave Boss. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013, at St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church in Osage Bend. Interment will follow in the St. Margaret of Antioch Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Margaret of Antioch Cemetery Fund.
