Mrs. Annie Victoria Hammen, age 90 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died peacefully Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Adams Street Place. Vickie was born October 20, 1922, in Callaway County, Mo., the third daughter of Earnest D. and Blanche O. Bugbee Burnett. She was married on December 31, 1942, in Jefferson City, Mo. to James O. Hammen. They first met at age 14, when Jimmy won the bid for Vickie's pie at a school supper. Their 70th anniversary was commemorated this past New Year's Eve. A life-long resident of the Jefferson City area, Vickie was a 1940, graduate of Jefferson City High School. Following graduation, she continued to study stenography and office management in business college. A devoted wife and mother, Vickie was a full-time homemaker until her children were in school. She was then employed as the Executive Secretary for the Missouri Presbytry and the Presbyterian Synod for many years prior to her retirement in 1977. She has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1951, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of the Rachel Circle. She was a member and past president of the United Methodist Women, served on the Administrative Board, was a leader for the church's youth group when her children were teenagers, and helped in many other capacities. Vickie was also a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Most of all, Vickie enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, as well as meeting with her cousins and her "Class of 40's girls." Other favorite hobbies included sewing, traveling, Bible study, and genealogy. That research took her to New York and Salt Lake City to study family history. She continued to love the Southwest after she and her family relocated to Tuscon for a short time in the 1950's. When her children were in school, Vickie was very involved in their activities, serving as Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and as member and past president of the South School PTA. During her children's high school years, Vickie and another mother organized social events which included a bus trip to St. Louis to see the Beatles, weekend dances she chaperoned and bands she hired to come to Jefferson City to perform, including the Liverpool Five and other well-known groups. As a volunteer at Memorial Hospital, she was recognized for her many years of service. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was always available to help other groups and individuals when she saw the need or was asked. Survivors include: her husband of seventy years, James O. Hammen; two daughters, Betty Fischer and her husband Noel, Patty Morrow and her husband Syd, and one son, Donald Hammen, all of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Brent Fischer and his wife Sherry, Troy Fischer, Andrew Hammen, Bryson Morrow, Beth Auerbach and her husband Dan, and Jameson Morrow; six great-grandchildren, Chelsea Fischer, Zachery Fischer, Caleb Fischer, Brooklynn Morrow, Leo Auerbach, and Sydney Morrow; as well as a special niece, Janan Huntsberry; her nephew, Steven Brehe; and other dear cousins, nieces, and nephews.
