Mrs. Shirley J. Birdno, age 70 years, of Eugene, Mo., passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, at home surrounded by her family. Shirley was born on March 17, 1942, in Williamsville, Mo., the daughter of Albert R. and Clara Bell Franklin Thompson. She was married on September 29, 1979, in St. Louis, Mo. to John Eugene Birdno. A resident of the central Missouri area since 1979, Shirley was employed with the Missouri State Office of Administration for 18 years until ill health forced her retirement in 2000. Shirley cherished the time that she spent with her husband, children and grandchildren and was so thankful for the dream home that her husband and son built for her. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, fishing, gardening and painting during her free time. She was also a spiritual person and started each day by watching her favorite television ministries. Survivors include: her husband of 33 years, John Birdno; four daughters, Dana Martin and her husband Steve of Jefferson City, Mo., Dede Hall of Springfield, Mo., Dawn Hester and her husband Arthur of Jefferson City, Mo., and Dena Muir and her husband Tim of Louisville, Ky.; six sons, Howard Setzer of Holts Summit, Mo., Joseph Setzer of Jefferson City, Mo., Timothy Setzer and his wife Susan of Versailles, Mo., John L. Birdno of Eugene, Mo., Jason Birdno and his wife Sarah of Carrolton, Mo., and Scott F. Birdno and his wife Melissa of Eugene, Mo.; one brother, Gary Thompson and his wife Glenda of Douglas, Kan.; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Lisa Setzer; and two brothers, Thomas Thompson and Larry Thompson. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be held at Eugene Cemetery in Eugene, Mo. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Lung Association.
