Janet Coralyn Sodergren, age 58, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at home after a brave battle with cancer. She was born on August 5, 1954, to Jim and Joan Lewis in Marshall, Mo. She married Tom Sodergren in 1977, and had two children, Susannah and Sam. Jan graduated from Marshall High School in 1972, and The University of Missouri-Columbia in 1976. She received a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology from Central Missouri State University in 1978. Jan worked for the Jefferson City Public Schools for 25 years as a Speech and Language Therapist, with the majority of those years at East Elementary, where she loved the students and was inspired by the staff. Jan enjoyed exercising, playing tennis, and taking long walks around the neighborhood with her dog. She traveled widely with her family through the years. At home she liked to read and try new recipes in the kitchen. Most of all, Jan loved spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Tom; her daughter, Susannah Sodergren of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her son, Sam Sodergren of Jefferson City; her mother, Joan Sawyer Lewis of Marshall; brother, James H. Lewis IV and his wife Julie of Marshall; sister, Wendy Richesson and her husband Steven of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Susie Lewis of Marshall; several nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law, Dee Abernathy of Jefferson City. Jan was preceded in death by her father, James Hunter Lewis Jr. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, 201 Monroe St., Jefferson City, MO 65101. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church for their youth program. Arrangements are under the direction of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.
