Stella M. Smith, 93, of California, Mo., passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Moniteau Care Center. She was born on July 21, 1919, near Kliever, Mo., the daughter of Eugene Porter and Sophia Ellen (Cook) Smith, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a 1927 graduate of Aurora High School in California, Mo. After graduation, Stella went to work for the Office of Administration, Personnel Division and retired after 37 years of service. Stella was a charter member of the California Women's Club, Secretary and Treasurer of the Union Baptist Cemetery Association in Jamestown, Mo., a former board member of the California Senior Housing Association, delivered meals on wheels, and worked with the bloodmobile. Stella was often noted as a professional volunteer after retirement as she was always involved in serving in any way she could. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, and had been active in the Women's guild, Evangeline Sunday School Class, and various other committees in church. Stella was very involved in politics, campaigning for local candidates. She enjoyed very much traveling, and she greatly enjoyed being with friends and eating out. She is survived by two nieces, Carole Ewing of Independence, Mo., and Nan Beth Schutte and husband Harold of Iowa City, Iowa; one nephew, Clayton Eugene Smith and wife Olivia of Bunceton, Mo.; many grand nephews and nieces. She enjoyed a long association with the Dahler family, and is survived by Keith and Carol Dahler, Larry Dahler, and Judy and Rick Goans. She was preceded in death by two brothers, W. Clayton Smith and Eugene Raymond Smith (died in infancy); one sister, Ruth Porter; and one niece, Sandra Sue (Porter) Tamony. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 5, 2012 from 1:30 Ã± 3:00 p.m. at the church with funeral services following at 3:00 p.m., at United Church of Christ in California. Burial will be in California Masonic Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Howard Ellis.
