The Reverend Hollis E. "Jack" Starr, age 78 years, of Holts Summit, Mo., died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital, Columbia, Mo. Jack was born February 13, 1934 in Milaca, Minn., the son of Hollis A. and Ruth Elizabeth Johnson Starr. He was married on January 24, 1958 in Funk, Neb., to Evelyn M. Lindquist. Jack was a 1951 graduate of Milaca High School, Milaca, Minn., and a 1957 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with degrees in English, Philosophy, and Greek. He received a Master of Divinity in Biblical Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. He did graduate work at the Bethel Theological Seminary and the University of Minnesota. Jack received a Master of Arts Degree in Church Ministries from Wheaton Graduate School in Wheaton, Ill., where he served as a Graduate Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School. Jack accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in June, 1950 and was ordained on November 2, 1963, by the Evangelical Free Church of America at Kingsburg, Calif. He was in the Chaplains School at the United States Navy Base at Newport, Rhode Island in 1967 and from 1967 until 1968, served with the Second Marine Division at Camp LeJeune, N.C. From 1968 until 1970, he served with the Mobile Construction Battalion 121, Seebee Base, Gulfport, Miss., where he made two tours of duty in Vietnam. While in Gulfport, he rode out Hurricane Camille, a category five storm that devastated the Gulf of Mexico with winds of 220 m.p.h. Jack served as a Chaplain at Great Lakes, Ill.; Fort Snelling, Minn.; Gary, Ind.; Chicago, Ill.; and Dallas, Texas prior to his retirement as Lieutenant Commander (O-4) on October 1, 1985. He served churches in Illinois, California, Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana, and Oklahoma. He served the Evangelical Free Church in Jefferson City, Mo. and the Mount Zion Reformed Presbyterian Church in Troy, Mo. Jack enjoyed traveling, golf, and photography, and most importantly, spending time with his family. Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Starr; two sons, Jeff Starr and his wife Sue of Jefferson City, Mo. and Gregg Starr and his wife Lisa of Lafayette, Ind.; and nine grandchildren, Jacob, Zachary, Brooke, Steven, Christopher, Sarah, Nathan, Samuel, and Caleb. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joyce Sandin and Bette Starr; and one niece, Carolyn Sandin. Visitation will be at the Capital City Christian Church from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Capital City Christian Church with the Reverend Mark Kiekhaefer and the Reverend Don Fankhauser officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Riverview Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Capital City Christian Church or the Grace Evangelical Free Church.
