Michael George Lucas, age 71, of Ballwin, Mo., passed from this life into the arms of our Lord on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, with his family at his side. He was born January 24, 1941, in Lawrence, Okla., son of the late George Wesley and Vernice Opal Johnson Lucas. On February 6, 1970, he was united in marriage in Jefferson City, Mo., to Norma Jean Coppin, who resides at the home. To this union, Mike became a loving father to Norma's three children. Mike was Oklahoma State 4-H president 1959-1960; National 4-H Congress delegate 1958, 1960; Oklahoma 4-H Hall of Fame, 1960. Mike attended Oklahoma State University grad-uating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Business and Accounting. Mike retired from Sears Roebuck and Company after 34 years of dedicated service having served in management positions at various locations: Kirksville, Mo.; Ottumwa, Iowa; Jefferson City, Mo.; and Peoria, Ill. Mike received numerous achievement awards and recognition during his career. Following retirement, he did consulting work for Sears as a project coordinator. He enjoyed a second retirement after spending seven years with various Circuit City stores in the St. Louis area. Mike particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing with good friends, as well as gardening and landscaping his yards such that they could have been featured in any magazine. Mike was also a master griller, thrilling friends and family with BBQ chicken, ribs, steak and the grandchildren's favorite - lamb chops. Other interests included showing American Saddlebred horses with his children, reading, and most importantly, spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Mike lived his life with integrity and wanted to be remembered as a good man. Mike was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by three children, Cathy Zeigler and husband Jim of Kansas City, Mo., Dan Coppin and fiancÃˆe Angela Dailey, Kirkwood, Mo., and Shelly McGowan and husband Brian of Overland Park, Kan.; one brother, James Lucas and wife Elaine of Roff, Okla.; one sister, Deborah Edwards of Tulsa, Okla.; five grandchildren, Andrew and Kyle Zeigler, Reed Hoeferlin, Grace and Gabrielle McGowan; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012, at St. Joseph Church, 567 Saint Joseph Lane, Manchester, MO 63021. A memorial service celebrating Mike's life will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of the donor's choice. Mike was a proud 15-year survivor as a bone marrow transplant recipient. The Lucas family wishes to thank and acknowledge the medical staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, especially Dr. John DiPersio, Dr. Peter Westervelt and the pulmonary team for the dedicated care Mike received during his bone marrow transplant and recent illness.
