Helen B. Phelps, age 94, of Jefferson City, died peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2012, in her apartment with her son-in-law, Tim, at her side. She was born July 6, 1917, in Orornogo, Mo., to Maggie Mae Strawhun Taylor and Virgil E. Taylor. She spent most of her adult life in the Rolla area. She retired from Rawling's Sporting Goods factory in Newburg, Mo., where she was president of her local union for over 20 years. Helen was known for writing poems all her life, often to commemorate special occasions. She had a great love for animals, especially dogs and birds with many rescues. Helen led an active life and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra de Helen of Portland, Ore. and Alberta Mobley (Tim), Jefferson City, Mo. Helen also has four living grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. A celebration of her life will be held at Hyder Apartments on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made in her name to the Jefferson City Animal Shelter.
