Josephine C. Backes, age 95, of Loose Creek, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012, at Adams Street Place in Jefferson City. Josephine was born March 19, 1916, in Loose Creek, a daughter to the late Theodore and Josephine (Schuelen) Kremer. Josephine attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Loose Creek. Josephine was a homemaker and also worked at the family business, Backes Poultry in Loose Creek. On September 17, 1936, Josephine was united in marriage to Martin L. Backes at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek. Her husband preceded her in death on March 30, 1971. Josephine was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek as well as the St. Ann's Ladies Sodality, the Sewing Circle and the Senior Citizens Group. Her hobbies included quilting, embroidery, flowers, walking and baking. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Josephine's survivors include: one son, Herbert and his wife Joan Backes of Loose Creek; four daughters, Bernice Huhn of Folk, Sr. Joan Backes, SSND of Anna, Ill., Delores and her husband Bob Taylor of Mannford, Okla. and Evelyn and her husband Greg Slinkard of Jefferson City; 17 grandchildren, Joyce Huhn, David Huhn, Brenda Huhn, Marlene (Bill) Barnhart, Richard (Renee) Huhn, Kenny (Lori) Huhn, Nancy (Ivan) Schmidt, Dale (Valerie) Huhn, John (Betsy) Huhn, Kevin (Cindy) Backes, Julie (Randy) Boeckman, Lori (Chuck) Wilson, Dennis Green, Dr. Jeffrey Green, Paula (Tim) Dougherty, Michelle Slinkard and Megan Slinkard; 23 great-grandchildren; two step- great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Angie Kremer; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Josephine was preceded in death by: two brothers, Henry and Pete Kremer; three sisters, Mary and Pauline Rustemeyer and Anna Backes; and a son-in-law, Vincent Huhn. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February, 16, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Smith and Fr. Richard Cronin concelebrating the Mass. Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Catholic School.
