Dorothy M. Berhorst, 74, of Westphalia, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at St. Mary's Health Center. She was born July 20, 1938, in St. Thomas the daughter of the late Henry P. and Agnes G. (Luebbering) Strope. On April 27, 1957, she was united in marriage in St. Thomas to Clarence W. Berhorst, who preceded her in death on July 14, 2005. Dorothy was a homemaker and was employed with Scholastics Inc., where she retired in 2004. She also worked at the Westphalia Inn, Fatima High School, cleaned houses and babysat for many years. She was an active member of the St. Ann Ladies' Sodality, the Knights of Columbus Ladies' Auxiliary, prayer line and social concerns committee. She enjoyed volunteering in the parish and nursing home. Dorothy loved being outdoors, gardening, birds, reading and baking. Most of all, she valued family and especially loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by seven sons: William Berhorst (Loretta), Michael Berhorst (Donna), Paul Berhorst (Tonya), Leon Berhorst (Carol), Gary Berhorst (Gina), Ronald Berhorst (DaLonna), and Scott Berhorst (Paula), all of Westphalia; six daughters: Joyce Boehm (Steve) of Rich Fountain, Agnes Boehm (Bill) of Rich Fountain, Karen Kempker (Allen) of Taos, Susan Rackers (Jeff) of Wardsville, Judy Roling (Travis) of Wardsville and Lori Schenewerk (Mark) of Westphalia; one son-in-law: Trevor Luetkemeyer of St. Elizabeth; one brother: Leonard Strope (Kathy) of St. Thomas and one brother-in-law: George Pope of Koeltztown; 32 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. She was preceded in death by two sons: Patrick Berhorst on February 6, 1998, and Joseph Berhorst on December 12, 1966; one daughter: Amy Luetkemeyer on July 30, 2010; and one sister: Bernice Pope on June 27, 2012. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Hilke-Millard Funeral Home in Westphalia, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass for the 3rd Sun of Advent with funeral rites will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, December 16, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, with Fr. Mark Smith as the celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Parish Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Joseph School in Westphalia.
