Howard R. Higgins Sr., age 84, of Houston, Texas, journeyed from his temporary life on earth to a far greater place on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Howard was born in LaPorte, Mich., Saginaw County, on December 8, 1927, and spent his youth in the Hemlock, Mich. area. He graduated from high school in Midland, Mich. in 1945, and immediately joined the Navy, where he served for two years. Howard started his working career as a journeyman electrician for the Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Mich. for several years until receiving a call to the ministry. He served as a pastor for the United Methodist Church in several locations including: Batavia, Iowa; Ossineke Charge (Hubbard Lake & Wilson), St. Ignace, and West Branch, Mich. After several years of illness and disability leave, he served churches in Lincoln Park, Mich., Tucson and Sun City West, Ariz. He spent his retirement years in Ariz., Linn, Mo. and Lake City, Mich., where his pastime was carving. He made small animals, a couple of life size ducks, Crosses for necklaces, and spoon sets for many friends. He sold some of these items and established a "shoe fund" at a local shoe store in Linn, Mo. to supply shoes for needy persons (mostly children) who could not afford them. Howard was the loving husband of Elouise; father of Howard and Sandi, Kathy and Larry, and Tom and Dianne; grandfather of six and great-grandfather of seven. Our hope is that Howard touched your life in some way that will make you smile. Please take a moment to celebrate with us and think of how you shared in his life along his journey and thank God that he is free of pain and oh so happy. Elouise continues to reside with Larry and Kathy in Houston at: 16834 Peach Forest Ct., Houston TX 77095 . Before he departed Howard arranged to have his body donated to science. A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired memorials may be sent to St. Johns United Methodist Church, Linn, MO 65051 for Howard's "Shoes for the Children" fund.
