Gene Volmert

Gene Marie Volmert, 90, of Jefferson City, formerly of Folk, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Heisinger Bluffs. She was born on April 3, 1921, in Hutchison, Kan., the daughter of the late George Edward and Frances Shale Ware Iske. She was united in marriage on November 14, 1943, to Henry L. Volmert, who preceded her in death on January 2, 2001. She lived much of her adult life in Baldwin Park, Calif., devoting herself to rearing six children and guiding them to take their place in the world as thoughtful and caring parents and spouses, and contributing members of their communities. To help with family finances, she sometimes worked part time as a waitress, and in the retail industry for companies such as J.C. Penneys, Montgomery Ward and Sears. Gene and her husband Henry were founding members of St. John the Baptist parish and school in Baldwin Park. They placed great emphasis on the importance of education for their children and were active both in the parish school at St. John's and in Bishop Amat High School, which all the children attended. After raising the family in Southern California, Gene and Henry retired to 15 acres near Folk, where Gene enjoyed gardening, canning and quilting. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Folk. She was also a member of the St. Anthony sewing circle. Survivors include: six children, Lawrence (Cheryl) Volmert, Denver, Colo.; Ann (Ray) Douglas, Mokelumne Hill, Calif.; Mark (Ellen) Volmert, Corvallis, Ore.; John Volmert (Fern Eng), Eugene, Ore.; Mary (Ron) Welemin, Victorville, Calif.; Susan (Bob) Bock, Jefferson City; 11 grandchildren, Kimberly Lewis, Holly Philpott, Laura Volmert, Andrew Volmert, Justin Volmert, Katy Swearingin, Anne Volmert, David Bock, Jonathan Bock, Matthew Welemin and Emily Welemin; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrna Cimini, Burbank, Calif. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2012, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Folk, with the Rev. Mark S. Smith officiating. Burial will be in St Anthony of Padua Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Friday, April 13, 2012, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, Jefferson City, with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Samaritan Center, 1310 East McCarty Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
