Mark Whitney Worthen, 49, of Jefferson City, died Monday, September 19, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born on February 10, 1962, in Covina, Calif., the son of the late Robert Deane and LaVaun Whitney Worthen. His mother survives in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mark was a 1980 graduate of Springfield High School in Virginia. He received a Bachelors degree in Spanish Translation in 1986, a Masters degree in Linguistics in 1991, and a Masters degree in Spanish in 1993, all from Brigham Young University. He was united in marriage on February 19, 2000, in Jefferson City, to Jeannie Eddy, who survives at the home. Mark was a Learning Specialist II with Lincoln University for the past 13 years. He also taught English for LG Academy in Seoul, Korea for three years. He was a member of the Jefferson City Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mark was an award-winning writer. Through his writings he was a member, webmaster, and Stoker co-chair for the Horror Writers of America, and was a member of the Jefferson City Writers Group. He enjoyed guitar, trivial pursuit, shooting, movies, and books. Other survivors include: seven children, Christopher (Jennifer) Hammann, Jefferson City, Anderson Bedwell, Jefferson City, Alexander Bedwell, Jefferson City, Lori (Monte) Swapp, Utah, Robert Worthen, Utah, Sean Worthen, Utah, A.J. Worthen, Utah; one grandson, Nicholas Hammann; and one brother, Jeffrey Worthen. He was preceded in death by his father, and a son, Craig Hammann. Visitation will be at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home on Friday, September 23, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Jefferson City Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
