James "J.P." Dalton (Veteran)

James P. "J.P." Dalton, age 84 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at the Capital Region Medical Center. Jim was born May 6, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the son of Judge S.P. and Edna Rusk Dalton. He was married on July 31, 1949, in Bismarck, N.D. to Kathryn S. Rindahl, who preceded him in death on April 29, 1999. A long time resident of the Jefferson City area, Jim was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson City High School. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and later earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri Law School in 1950. Jim served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He practiced law in Maryville, Mo. where he also served as City Judge and Assistant County Prosecutor. In 1960, he returned to Jefferson City as Corporate Counsel and Commissioner of Securities with the Missouri Secretary of State. Later, he served as General Counsel and Superintendent of the Missouri Insurance Department. In 1973, he returned to private law practice in Jefferson City and later served as the City Attorney for six years. He retired from the practice of law in 2005. He was a member of the Missouri Bar Association and a Charter Member of The Missouri Heritage Foundation. Jim enjoyed hunting, arrowhead collecting, gardening, farming, and was an avid conservationist. Survivors include: four children, Rebecca J. Dalton of Black Mountain, N.C., Christopher J. "Kif" Dalton of Russellville, Mo., Andrea Dalton Rau and her husband Michael of Washington, Mo., and Bridget R. Dalton of Russellville, Mo.; one sister, Rusk D. Anderson and her husband Arnold of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Wm. A.R. "Andy" Dalton and his wife Sue Dalton of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Adam Dalton Rau of Columbia, Mo., Megan E. Rau of Columbia, Mo., Emily Ann Rau of Norfolk, Va., and Matthew James Rau of Columbia, Mo.; and his beloved dog, Daisy. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011. A celebration of life will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Freeman Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri Heritage Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice.
