Helen Gibson (Veteran)

Helen (Henley) Gibson, 90, Eldon, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011, in Eldon. She was born July 27, 1921, in Eugene, the daughter of Mason Otto and Sophie (Kubli) Henley. She joined the U.S. Marine Corp on December 3, 1943, and served as a gunnery instructor in El Centro, California until July 26, 1945. While serving in the Marine Corp, she married James M. Gibson who preceded her in death, also preceding her in death are two brothers, Ray Henley of Eldon and Carl Henley of Eugene and a sister, Emma Harney of Springfield, Oregon. Helen worked for the Missouri Department of Revenue as a cashier for over 18 years and in the disbursement section of the State Treasurer's Office for 10 years. Helen was a member of the Eldon Chapter DAR, the Miller County Historical Society, the Eugene Chapter #386 of the Eastern Star, and the Association of Retired State Employees. She is a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW and the Eugene Country Club. She served as a volunteer at the Veteran's Hospital for several years and worked at the Miller County Courthouse counting absentee ballots each election for many years. She also wrote the Gageville items each week for the Eldon Advertiser for many years. Survivors include: two sons, Eddie Gibson and Dennis Gibson, both of Eldon; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Alma Huff, Kansas City, Mo. and one brother, Jim Henley, Plattsburg, Mo. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 30, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. at First Christian Church, Eldon. Funeral service will be Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with Rev. Shirley Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Garden Cemetery, Eugene. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Spring Garden Cemetery.
