Walter Henry "Shep" Scheperle

Walter Henry "Shep" Scheperle, 90, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born December 4, 1920, in Jefferson City, a son of Louis and Alma Anna Marie (Heinricks) Scheperle. He was a graduate of Trinity Lutheran School and Jefferson City High School. Walter served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946, serving in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal. He was so inspired to serve his country that he faked not having a deaf ear so he could enlist. On October 30, 1946, Walter was united in marriage in Jefferson City to Frances Ann Van Loo, who preceded him in death on March 15, 2004. Following his military service, Walter worked for Curtis-Wright and Irving-Skinker in St. Louis and drove a delivery truck for Double Cola. He co-owned Dixie CrËme Doughnuts in Eldon and the Gulf service station in Cedar City. He owned and operated Scheperle Gulf Service on Dunklin Street at Clark Avenue until Gulf Oil left Missouri. From 1975 until his retirement in 1985 he was the garage supervisor at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Walter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 5, V.F.W. Post 1003, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2693 and was a charter member of the Cosmopolitan Club. He was an avid Jefferson City Jays and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Walter loved to fish and enjoyed fishing at Bennett Springs. He also enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Survivors include one daughter, Gerry Lynn DeLong and husband Daniell of Jefferson City; one daughter-in-law, Marcia J. Scheperle of Jefferson City; a "special" daughter, Jeannie Scheperle of Wardsville; one grandson, Larry E. Scheperle of Jefferson City; two step-grandchildren: Aaron M. Scheperle and Krista Moseley; one sister, Margaret Vandeloecht of Fulton; one sister-in-law, Virginia Ortmeyer; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry E. Scheperle Sr. on October 13, 1971; two brothers, Hugo and Cletus W. Scheperle; and one sister, Beulah Beatty. Friends will be received from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 21, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Samuel Powell and Rev. Gerald Scheperle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
