Melvin Childs, 69, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011, after a four and one-half year battle with cancer. He was born June 5, 1942, in Norborne, a son of Billy and Elizabeth Ogle Childs. He was a graduate of Tina-Avalon High School near Chillicothe. Melvin was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1961-1965. On July 17, 1966, Melvin was united in marriage in Laredo, to Shila Williams, who survives at their home. He worked for Menu Maker Foods for 46 years, moving to Jefferson City from Chillicothe when the company's operations began. Although slowed by his health, Melvin was still active with Menu Maker at the time of his death. Melvin accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1967 and was a member of Concord Baptist Church. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family. Other survivors include two sons: David Childs and wife Danielle of Jefferson City, and Aaron Childs of Jefferson City and his fiancÈe, Bethany Cook of Springfield; one grandson: Nick Deves of Jefferson City; one brother: Dale Childs and wife Lynn of Oak Grove; one sister: Diane Fischer and husband Randy of Jefferson City; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Williams of Kirksville and Twila Callihan and husband Merrill of Trenton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy and Elizabeth Childs; mother and father-in-law, Cleda R. and Babe Williams; and a brother-in-law, Cleda M. Williams. Friends will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
