Peter Redel (Veteran)

Peter Owen Redel, age 86, of Fairhaven, Mass., formerly of Jefferson City and Vienna, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011, in New Bedford, Mass. Mr. Redel had been in failing health for some time. He was born on August 4, 1925, a son of George James and Agnes Frances (Bade) Redel. Mr. Redel was united in marriage on August 27, 1954, at Vienna, to Bonnie Fay McDaniel, and to this union, one daughter was born. Mr. Redel was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Jefferson City, for 42 years and at the time of his passing, was a member of the St. Mary's Parish, Fairhaven, Massachusetts. He was a World War II United States Army veteran; a member of the Jefferson City Rotary Club; the Knights of Columbus; the National Association of Professional Engineers and the Missouri Association of Professional Engineers. Mr. Redel attended Visitation Catholic Grade School and graduated from Vienna High School in 1944 and was a 1955 graduate of the Rolla School of Mines and Metallurgy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He entered the United States Army in March of 1944. During his military service, he served with Company L 406th Infantry Regiment of the 102nd Infantry "Ozark" Division in the Ninth Army in the European Campaign. He received the Combat Infantry Badge; the Good Conduct Medal; after being wounded, the Purple Heart; the Bronze Service Star for the Campaign Rhineland; and the Bronze Service Star for the Campaign Central Europe. Sgt. Redel then served with the Service Battery 14th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. A man of excellent character, Mr. Redel was honorably discharged from the United States Army in December of 1946. Following his military service, Mr. Redel was employed by the Missouri Department of Transportation for 36 years. He retired as District Engineer for the Central Area District (Division 5) on September 4, 1991. As a young man, Mr. Redel was a shortstop on local baseball teams and played on the Vienna High School basketball team. In later years, he remained a loyal Cardinal baseball fan and was an avid golfer and bowler. He and his wife, Bonnie, enjoyed ballroom dancing. For many years he raised cattle on a family farm near Vienna. Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Redel include: his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Ann and Michael Esposito, Mattapoisett, Mass.; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Jim and Jeanne Redel, Vienna; Rose Redel, Oakley, Kansas and Betty Redel, St. Louis; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Jones, St. Louis; Virginia Redel, Vienna; Mary Agnes Hefferly, Potomac, Md.; Jane Frances and Ralph Sordyl, Springfield, Ill.; nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife on December 2, 2009; his father on November 11, 1963; his mother on May 22, 1994; four brothers, Cornelius Redel on September 5, 2008, Adrian Redel on July 5, 2001, George William Redel on May 22, 1982, and John Jerome Redel on July 12, 1927, at the age of three years; two sisters, Kathleen G. Redel on September 11, 1920, at the age of seven months and Marcella G. Redel on May 24, 2003; one brother-in-law, Richard Muncy Jones on October 28, 1975; and one sister-in-law, Irene Graham Redel on December 5, 2009. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mr. Redel at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2011, in the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna, with the Rev. Msgr. Marion J. Makarewicz officiating. Interment will be in the Vienna Public Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m., Friday, November 18, 2011, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2011, with all being in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Spiritual offerings to be applied for Masses or memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's' Association, the American Heart Association, or the Samaritan Center with envelopes available at the Vienna Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
