Mr. Donald R. Janssen, age 87 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, November 14, 2011, at the Capital Region Medical Center. Don was born November 19, 1923, in David City, Neb., the son of Carl E. and Ida McConnel Janssen. He was married on November 8, 1946, in Fulton, Mo., to Margaret J. "Margie" Gray. Don was a 1941 graduate of Aurora High School in Aurora, Neb. After high school, he served in the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific. A longtime resident of the Jefferson City area, Don was employed with the Missouri Highway Dept. as an auditor in the Accounting Dept. for 30 years prior to his retirement on August 31, 1985. He was a member of the First Christian Church; the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; and a past member of the Jefferson City Optimists. Don enjoyed woodworking, bird watching, cloud watching, playing dominoes, but most importantly, spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margie Janssen, and several by-proxy adopted children that he and Margie helped raise. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Eugene C. Janssen; and two sisters, Mary David and Betty Janssen. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 18, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 18, 2011, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Donald Carter officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Red Cross or the Food Pantry at the First Christian Church.
