Carl Jaynes, age 81, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born April 27, 1929, in Jackson County, Ohio, the eldest son of John and Myrtle (Lambert) Jaynes. On December 10, 1955, he was married to Betty Jean Parks of Xenia, Ohio, who preceded him in death on October 2, 2010. The couple was longtime members of First United Methodist Church of Jefferson City. Carl resided for many years in Xenia, Ohio, and was a 1946 graduate of Xenia Central High School. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1950-1952, receiving the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He built his career in the manufacturing industry and in 1980 moved his family to Jefferson City to manage the parts manufacturing division of Shopsmith, Inc. In 1985, he purchased the business and founded Jefferson City Manufacturing Company. Carl's contributions to the community were numerous. He served two terms on the Jefferson City Council, was active in Rural Missouri Industries and Associated Industries of Missouri, served on the advisory council of the Missouri Department of Transportation, was a member of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce and served on its Industrial Development Committee. He was also a lifetime member of Memorial Hospital's Board of Governors and a board member of Linn State Technical College. Carl was a longtime member of both the Rotary-West and the Optimist Clubs of Jefferson City. As part of his involvement with the Optimist Club, he was the driving force behind the W.H.A.L.E. ("We Have a Little Emergency") program for placing emergency information on child car seats. His love of learning and generous spirit made him an integral part of The Special Learning Center, as he served on its Board of Trustees. A gifted natural musician, Carl enjoyed playing the guitar and the organ at many informal events over the years. Guests in his home were often treated to his musical entertainment. He enjoyed fishing, visiting "the boat" in Boonville, and in younger years was a bowler and horseshoe-pitcher. All who knew Carl will remember his warm smile, kind words, quick wit and his ability to brighten up any gathering. He is survived by two daughters, Carla Bethke (Ralph) of Arvada, Colorado, and Cheri Twehous (Mike Martin) of Jefferson City; a son, Christopher Carl Jaynes of Vancouver, Washington; two brothers, Robert (Bob) Jaynes and Keith Jaynes, both of Xenia, Ohio; two grandchildren, Katelyn Twehous of Columbia and Kirk Twehous of Jefferson City, who will miss their "Poppy" greatly.
